Illumen Wins Spot on NOAA's $8B ProTech 2.0 Oceans Contract
Protecting one estuary is local work. Sustaining that work across 29 coastal research sites for a decade requires national-scale operational discipline. Joint venture LightFront holds one of 18 positions on NOAA's ProTech 2.0 Oceans Domain contract, a 10-year IDIQ with an $8 billion ceiling across the ProTech program.
The contract funds NOAA's National Ocean Service and its 29 coastal research sites. The work covers scientific data collection, geospatial mapping of coastal areas, environmental monitoring, applied research, and the program management that keeps all of it coordinated across sites. LightFront won the seat through a competitive small business set-aside that drew 19 offers. The contract carries a five-year base period and a five-year option.
The win gives LightFront a vehicle to carry demonstrated capability into operations. The team has been doing AI, machine learning, and autonomous systems work with NOAA, including the space-based AI and unmanned vehicle data collection for ocean monitoring presented at the ProTech Innovation Showcase. A strong federal demonstration often stalls there, with no contract to take the work forward at scale. ProTech 2.0 is the contract that lets LightFront move that capability from showcase to fieldwork. The work protects the estuarine and coastal systems that communities and ecosystems rely on.
Coastal research rewards teams that sustain the operational discipline to keep data flowing and sites running year after year, without dropping the thread between the science and the logistics. LightFront's standard for this contract is to hold that discipline from the first task order through the option period.
